I started reading “The Creative Habit” in mid-December, near the time of the horrific tragedy in Newtown, CT. I don’t think I need to explain, just say or write the word, NEWTOWN and you will know what I’m talking about. I only remember vaguely who I was at the age of six. I was a scared little deaf boy who would not get his first hearing aid for another year just before I started in Kindergarten. Life can be terrifying, but at least I’ve had 60 more years since I turned six to figure stuff out. At least enough time to figure some things out and eventually start on the great adventure of pursuing a Ph.D.

NEWTOWN shook me to my bones. I was consumed with rage. How dare somebody snuff out the lives of those little kids before they even had a chance to finish the first grade? How dare the NRA (not the National Restaurant Association) be opposed to trying to prevent this from happening again?

Just as I was becoming really disheartened by the news of the day I came across an exercise that felt right to me. Tharp suggests “Give Me One Week Without…” (Tharp 32 - 33) Newspapers. YES! I could do without Facebook, MSNBC, Washington Post for five days. So on December 19th I went on my “diet.” Now what was I going to do with all that time – Clean my Closet and my room that was full of clutter from at least two years ago. In that week I cleared out a ton of junk! I feel lighter.

I was ready to go the Cincinnati for my third Residency. When I returned I started the New Year with a three-day a week exercise program to tone up and loose weight. Oh, I also changed my facial hairstyle.
